ZESCO Tours GEM

A ten (10)-member delegation from the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation limited (ZESCO) company were provided the opportunity to acquaint themselves with Ghana Electrometer’s (GEM) technical operations to enable them deepen their knowledge on the prepaid metering processes of Ghana.

The visit aimed to enhance knowledge of ZESCO officials on GEM’s prepaid metering processes in order to familiarize themselves with the company and its products.

Briefing the delegation, Mr. Obed Solomon, Director of Strategic Operations and External Relations, extolled the virtues of GEM prepaid metering service since its inception in Ghana as it gives accurate data on usage and this has boosted revenue collection efficiency for ECG and Government of Ghana.

With the delegation seeking to know about the strides GEM was making in regards to technological developments with its Meters, Mr. Obed Solomon reiterated the fact that Ghana Electrometer through its partnership with Elsewedy Electrometer did not lag behind in technological advancements with the introduction of its latest product the Smart G meter which main feature is anti-tempering that would automatically send an on time SMS to the utility inspector indicating the name and address of the consumer in the event of any meter tampering.

Mohammed Abdelnaby IT Director mentioned that GEM has made several technological strides in prepayment metering as its products are imbedded with GPRS for remote assistance and upgrade of its meters.

He also enlightened the delegation about the quota system of vending currently being implemented in Ghana by ECG to enhance revenue collection and protection.

The five-day visit, also allowed the team made up of seven engineers, two technicians and an accountant, led by officials of El Sewedy Electrometer from Egypt to visit the Doctors flat at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi and other commercial areas where the Smart- G meters have been installed.

They had the opportunity to interact with users and acquaint themselves with the operation of the metering device that functions on GPRS to enable them implement the system in Zambia.
