ECG tours Electrometer
To enable stakeholders have first-hand information about Ghana Electrometer’s(GEM) technical operations, selected officials of Electricity Company of Ghana(ECG) across the country in GEM’s operated areas were provided the opportunity to tour GEM’s ultramodern state of the art metering facility in Accra to further strengthen their relationship.
The selected officials included, Ecg Ashanti – Sbu Director Mr. Joseph Amakyi, Ecg Western Region – General Manager Mrs. Jacqueline Ann Gyakyewaa Ofori-Atta, Ecg Central Region – General Manger Mr. Abraham Anokye Abebreseh, Ecg Ashanti-West -West Project Engineer Mr. Ebenezer Kwakye Sarkwa, Ecg District Technical Officer (Dto)- Takoradi, Mr. Joseph Pobi Wesley, Ecg Dto Cape Coast Mr. Julius Evans Sarkodie, Ecg Dto Danyame Mr. Sylvester Kawami Afedo, Ecg Dto Legon Mr. Sampson Kojo Afukar
The tour also aimed at enhancing knowledge of the ECG officials on prepaid metering processes in order to deepen their understanding of the company and its products.
Deputy Managing Director of GEM, Madam Sheila Darkwa used the opportunity to thank ECG and reiterated GEM’s commitment to partnering ECG to provide quality prepaid meters to customers in Ghana.
She further revealed that GEM has acquired a polycarbonate injection machine as it is in the near future considering production of plastic covers for the meters in Ghana as part of the company’s expansion works.
Taking the officials round the Facility, Basem Mohammed Abdel Latif, Quality Control Manager of GEM described the various stages of the assembling of a meter. He explained the phases of assembling the meters and they included; Assembly line phase, Calibration procedure, Programming, Testing phase and finally Packaging. He also disclosed to the officials during the facility tour that about 2000 meters were assembled daily.
Interacting during the tour Mr. Sampson Kojo Afukar, ECG DTO Legon commended GEM for the introduction of Smart G meters, applauding its unique anti-tampering feature.
Director of Strategic Operations and External Relations, Mr. Obed Solomon said the Smart G meter is the latest advanced prepaid meter among a wide range of meters. Made up of Energy Management Unit (EMU) and User/Customer Interface Unit (UIU/CIU), Smart G is designed to enable the utility companies remotely collect metering data as well as configure the meter.
“It also equips the utility company to monitor tampering events, consumer loads and power quality, it has an easy method of recharging using the mobile phone by SMS service and disposal scratch cards and its high quality standard meets both local and international standards” he added.
According to him, 5000 Smart G meters has so far been deployed in the Ashanti West region.
On issues confronting the usage of prepaid meters by Consumers, he said there is the need for ECG to engage suppliers as to how best Customers could be educated on the usage of prepaid meters to foster a good relationship between customers and ECG for the avoidance of customers requesting for a change of meter.
He also used the opportunity to urge ECG to improve upon their server room for optimal use of the servers for mutual benefits of both ECG and GEM.
Ghana Electrometer, Ghana’s premier locally based assembling and metering solutions provider in the power generation sector since 2004 has been providing credit and prepayment meters to ECG, as well as the Ministry of Power. So far GEM has deployed over 415,000 credit meters and about 600,000 prepayment meters in many cities across the country.
